Trump Prescription Drug Orders Include “One Pill, One Price” Proposal Championed by Hagedorn

Press Release

WASHINGTON – Congressman Jim Hagedorn (MN-01) today issued the following statement in support of the four bold executive orders signed by President Trump last week. The orders are designed to lower prescription drug prices. Hagedorn also addressed the inclusion of “One Pill, One Price,” a proposal he has long championed to lower the cost of prescription drugs.

"President Trump’s orders will ease burdens on American families by capping out-of-pocket drug costs for patients who use insulin, EpiPens and other treatments for chronic conditions. The president’s actions also legalize the importation of identical but cheaper drugs from Canada, Mexico and other nations, as well as prohibit middlemen, known as pharmacy benefit managers, to distribute or receive kickbacks or override the will of doctors and patients as it pertains to filling prescriptions.

"The president’s executive action implements policy positions I have championed for many years, including my ‘One Pill, One Price’ proposal, which simply requires drug companies to sell medications and therapies in the U.S. – across all 50 states – at the same prices for which they are sold abroad. America is the world leader in prescription drug innovation, but we should not pay more for the exact same medications and, in effect, subsidize the world.

"Under President Trump’s leadership, we had already experienced a reduction in drug costs for the first time in 51 years. With implementation of these new commonsense policies, we can expect significantly lower prescription drug costs for southern Minnesotans and all Americans."

Jim Hagedorn was elected in 2018 to represent Minnesota’s First District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He grew up on his family’s grain and livestock farm near Truman. Jim’s father, former U.S. Congressman Tom Hagedorn (MN-02), grandfather, and great-grandfather were all southern Minnesota farmers. Jim currently resides in the rural farming community of Blue Earth. Hagedorn brings policy experience to Capitol Hill from time spent as a congressional aide to former U.S. Congressman Arlan Stangeland (MN-07) and a congressional relations officer for two non-partisan U.S. Department of the Treasury agencies. Hagedorn serves on the House Committees on Agriculture and Small Business to promote farming, Main Street enterprises and southern Minnesota’s way of life.
